When Hermit Crabs Disappear

Posted in Aquarium Stories on Apr 06, 2008

I’ve been a fan of keeping hermit crabs in my fish tanks. I’ve never had problems with them and they clean up a lot of stuff that falls to the rocks. They like to eat pretty much anything they can get their grubby little hermit crab claws on.

Because they get to eat a lot, they molt a lot. They disappear for a few days and then all of the sudden they are back to crawling all over inside of the aquarium. Each time one of the hermit crabs disappears, I still kinda wonder if maybe it died, but it always shows up within a few days again.

The current AWOL hermit crabs are the Electric Blue Hermit Crab and Halloween Hermit Crab.

These two guys seem to be on the same molting cycle right now. Just the other day they were all over the tank, and now I haven’t seen either for 3-4 days.

Soon enough both of these hermit crabs will be back running around in my tank. I’m just kinda curious as to which day they will pick to re-appear. Maybe the Electric Blue Hermit Crab will swap shells again too. He likes to swap out his shell quite often for a different one, mainly just for “hermit crab entertainment value” by the looks of it and by how often he actually swaps shells.

Life is hard when you gotta maintain an aquarium. Or something like that. Keeping an aquarium keeps you on your toes. It's fun.
